TORONTO -- Nichelle Prince has a photo of herself with Kara Lang at a game several years ago at BMO Field. Prince figures she was 11 at the time. Lang was starring for Canadas womens soccer team. "Its crazy, looking back at that picture," Prince said. "And now Im coming out into the same stadium, and Im taking pictures with other girls. Its crazy." It was a surreal moment when Prince and her Canadian teammates walked through the tunnel and onto the field at the National Soccer Stadium -- or BMO Field -- on Tuesday, in Canadas opening game of the FIFA U20 Womens World Cup, a 1-0 loss to Ghana. It was the same tournament back in 2002 that launched the international careers of the likes of Lang and Christine Sinclair, who would go on to become household names in Canada. Lang scored three goals in six games as a 15-year-old, while Sinclair would win both the golden ball as MVP and the golden boot as top goalscorer. Canada made it all the way to the final, where it lost to the U.S. in front of a crowd of 37,194 in Edmontons Commonwealth Stadium. While this years team would love to repeat the success of 2002, the Canadians are realistic. "We knew that getting to a quarter-final, winning a quarter-final, was a realistic objective for us, and anything more would be too ambitious based on how the program has done over the last 12 years," said coach Andrew Olivieri. "Winning a quarter-final is still our objective, and then after that, well enjoy (each game) and gain from the experience." Canada faces Finland on Friday in Toronto and then North Korea on Tuesday in Montreal, and need to win both to avoid an early exit. North Korea edged Finland 2-1 in the other Group A game on Tuesday. Canada hasnt played either team, so Olivieri said its tough to gauge how well his team stacks up against them. "Unless you play these teams at the youth level, its very difficult to compare," said Olivieri, who was a goalkeeper for Canadas mens team and the Montreal Impact. "We know that North Korea at the youth level are one of the best countries in the world. And Finland, any team that gets of Europe are going to be a quality side, and we just feel that those two matches are matches that we can win. "But now its clear. We know we have to win both. That makes our jobs simpler." Prince injected some energy into the Canadian offence when she came into Tuesdays game as a second-half substitute. She had one of Canadas best scoring chances in the loss, beating two defenders to get a shot off. The 19-year-old from Ajax, Ont., was a two-sport athlete in high school, running track and playing soccer. Shes already shone in her young college career, starting in all but one of her games in her freshman season with the Ohio State Buckeyes. She led the Buckeyes with 13 goals. Prince and Olivieri said the Canadians struggled with some nerves in the early going Tuesday, playing in front of almost 15,000 fans at BMO Field, normally home to Major League Soccers Toronto FC. But neither is worried that theyll face the same problem on Friday. "Absolutely (were over that)," Olivieri said. "You saw it in the first game. The first half to the second was completely different. We talk about growing through the tournament, well the girls grew through the game, and that was fantastic to see." Prince had numerous friends and family members in the stands on Tuesday night and expects the same Friday. "My parents bought tickets for about a thousand people in my family," she said -- noting the actual number was about 30. The Canadians need to finish top two in Group A to advance to the quarter-finals. The Group A winner will play its quarter-final in Toronto, while second place in the group will head to Edmonton for the quarters. The tournament semifinals are in Montreal and Moncton, N.B., while Montreal hosts the gold-medal game. Cheap Old Skool Wholesale . The deals were announced on Friday. PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Vancouver Whitecaps can finally say theyve beaten their archrivals in Major League Soccer. Pedro Morales scored twice on penalty kicks as Vancouver defeated Portland 4-3 on Sunday for the Whitecaps first win against the Timbers since both teams entered the league in 2011. Erik Hurtado and Jordan Harvey also scored for the Whitecaps (5-2-5), who led 4-1 but had to fend off a late rally by the Timbers to stay unbeaten in five straight games. Portland put a scare into the Whitecaps with goals in the 77th and 86th minutes but Vancouvers offence was too much for the Timbers to handle, according to Hurtado. "No matter what were going to attack," he said. "Whether were at home, whether were away, whether were down, whether were up, were going to try to score goals. Thats the kind of team we are." Maximiliano Urruti, Gaston Fernandez and Will Johnson scored for Portland (3-4-7), which had its 22-game unbeaten run at home end. Urruti scored an impressive opener after just three minutes and Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted saved a second goal in the first 10 minutes with a sprawling dive on a goal-bound Johnson shot moments later. In the 15th minute the games momentum shifted as Hurtado drew a penalty against Portland defender Jack Jewsbury following a darting run into the box. Morales converted in the 16th minute, drawing the game even against the run of play. Vancouver was awarded a second penalty nine minutes later when Jorge Villafana tackled Sebastian Fernandez inside the box. Kekuta Mannehs run sparked the play but the crowd didnt appreciate the call for a second consecutive spot kick. Morales converted again, increasing his team-leading goal total to five. The Whitecaps were lucky not to concede a penalty of their own when Diego Valeri was tackled from behind in the box but referee Kevin Stott withheld his whistle and play continued despite the protests of Portland coach Caleb Porter. Hurtado concluded his strong first half by scoring a rebounded goal after a sharp cross from Morales deep in injury time.dddddddddddd Donovan Ricketts saved Hurtados initial shot but the ricochet deflected off of the Portland natives knee and bounced over the line for a 3-1 advantage. Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson praised the play of Hurtado, who grew up in the Portland suburbs and played for the Timbers under-23 team before being drafted by the Whitecaps in 2013. "Hes been superb," said Robinson. "When you (play in front of family and friends) as a young player, you try to go away from the things that youre good at. He didnt do that. I thought his movement was excellent and he got his reward with the goal." Robinson replaced Manneh with Russell Teibert to open the second half as Vancouver downshifted to more comfortably manage the expected Portland attack. Yet it was the Whitecaps who struck first after the break with Morales crossing to left back Harvey, who fired into the bottom right corner for a 4-1 advantage in the 49th minute. Portland changed its offensive plan by inserting forwards Fanendo Adi and Fernandez for the ineffective Steve Zakuani and Urruti, respectively, but the visitors held their ground for much of the second half. Finally, Fernandez headed in a Valeri cross to cut the deficit to two goals in the 77th minute. Ousted then dove to save an Adi shot in the 84th minute but was helpless when Adi juggled the ball and flicked it to Johnson, who hammered home Portlands third in the 86th. The Whitecaps withstood a barrage of late pressure thanks to key saves from Ousted and strong performances from defenders Jay DeMerit and Andy OBrien. After the game, Robinson was still focused on his teams effective attack. "If youd said to me before the game, would I take a 4-3, I wouldve," he said. "I know were a team that can score goals. I said all along Id rather win 4-3 than 1-0." Vancouver next travels to Philadelphia to play the Union on Saturday. ' ' ' |
