Cover your feet.
Skeeters love sweat and bacteria, which makes your toes a prime blood sucking spot. "The Aedes aegypti mosquito, likely responsible for the spread of Zika, tends to bite on the lower body," says Thomas Scott, Ph.D, professor of epidemiology at the University of California, Davis. Use insect repellant and consider wearing quality sneakers or high socks.

Dress up for more success.
Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing that hides your arms and legs. "Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors," Scott explains. So leave the black and navy blue at the back of your closet and embrace those lovely summer white and pastel outfits.

Eat inside when possible.
Scott notes that while most mosquitoes found in the United States bite in the evening, the species that are believed to carry Zika feed during daylight hours. Especially if you live in the South, where you are most likely to see mosquitoes carrying Zika, enjoy a Cobb salad indoors.

And if you enjoy being outside, bribe it the day before.

The patio tent.
If you have a small encounter, it may be easier to camp out the area where the guests will be eating. This will eliminate any concerns about accidentally spraying the food with insect repellant and keep other unwanted guests away such as bees and flies. Many companies make canopy tents using mosquito netting accessories, or even nets attached to parasols.
Place candles or lanterns.
Provide adequate lighting - and keep guests comfortable - with an insect repellent screw lamp. For a sophisticated encounter, try a lamp like Thermacell's Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern, which can be hung or placed on a flat surface.
However, if you are looking to party late at night, consider longlasting candles. Waxes containing geraniol are more effective than citronella at repelling mosquitoes, so be sure to look for candles that specifically contain this ingredient.
Whatever sources you use, you will want to place your lights strategically to ensure adequate coverage. Most of these products repel up to 15 "by 15" square, but check packaging and place accordingly. |
