Freddie Roach has revealed he recently had a visit from Floyd Mayweather asking him to consider training Conor McGregor. A crossover bout between the boxing superstar and UFC featherweight champion McGregor has been talked up by both fighters for months, with Mayweather posting a mock-up poster on Instagram on Monday teasing a fight between the pair on pay-per-view. And it seems the 39-year-old has also taken it upon himself to recruit a trainer for McGregor for his potential foray into boxing, with Roach revealing Mayweather visited him at his famed Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles to discuss the possibility. Freddie Roach is the man who masterminded Manny Pacquiaos career Roach told Inside MMA on AXS TV: There are a lot of rumours out there that Im getting calls from Conor, asking me to train him; theyre not true.He has not called me yet but Mayweather did come by my gym last week and he asked me to take that job if its offered to me.He told me the fight is going to happen and were going to make a lot of money. If McGregor were to seek out a boxing trainer and chose to look outside Ireland, Roach stands out as a natural candidate given his past experience of working with a host of UFC fighters, including Andrei Arlovski, Anderson Silva, Tito Ortiz, BJ Penn and Georges St-Pierre.He also possesses intimate knowledge of what its like to face Mayweather, having trained both Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao for their bouts against him. Floyd Mayweather could face Conor McGregor in a crossover bout McGregor spent time last week in Los Angeles, after flying out to shoot a spread for ESPN The Magazines Body Issue. While there, he took the opportunity to spar with some professional boxers, but Roach heard less than favourable reports on how he fared.Conor McGregor seems like a tough guy and all that but being a tough guy doesnt really help you in boxing, Roach said. But I do know that hes trained at Wild Card West, which is one of my gyms on the west side, and hes sparring with a couple of my professional fighters over there and I hear hes not doing that well with my professionals.Mayweather is the best boxer in the world and I think he would absolutely not even lose a round against a guy with Conors experience. I mean, he looks like an okay boxer, hes a very good MMA fighter, but the thing is this is boxing and hes kind of a beginner at boxing. It probably would take me almost three years to get him ready for a fight against a guy like Mayweather. I was surprised how well he could handle it. His boxing is really not bad. Id say after a full training camp where the focus is 100 per cent boxing, he might just shock a lot of boxing fans.Id say he needs work on his footwork. Placing of feet and balance and knowing when to throw the right punch; not just throw anything out there. He has a very good eye for timing and counter-punching.After a good clean-up on skill, he will be in there for a few rounds, but the truth is Floyd will have his way. He is the master of boxing. No one beats Floyd. Chris van Heerden poses with Conor McGregor after sparring. Credit: Instagram/thenotoriousmma Despite the building speculation regarding a fight between McGregor and Mayweather, significant stumbling blocks remain. For the fight to go ahead, three parties must agree: Mayweather, McGregor and, because of the Irishmans contract status, also the UFC hierarchy of the Fertita brothers, who own it, and company president Dana White.Whether the UFC would permit its biggest star to compete in a boxing match is by no means certain, but White did not sound open to it during an appearance on The Herd earlier this month.[Its] a complete disadvantage for Conor in boxing and an absolute disadvantage for Floyd in MMA, White said.Another stumbling block could be - with any potential fight almost certain to take place in Las Vegas - whether the Nevada State Athletic Commission would sanction a boxing match between a fighter who is 49-0 and one who has never had a professional boxing fight. Conor McGregor posted this picture on Instagram. Credit: www.instagram.com/thenotoriousmma Sky Sports contacted them on the subject, but they declined to comment on hypothetical alleged fights. The far more likely option for McGregor remains a rematch with Nate Diaz, who defeated him via second-round submission in March. The pair were scheduled to fight at UFC 200 on July 9, only for the bout to be scrapped when McGregor and the UFC had a disagreement regarding his media obligations. The UFC took McGregors recent trip to the US as an opportunity to resolve those differences, with White and Lorenzo Fertita meeting him for dinner in Beverley Hills on May 19.Those discussions are believed to have progressed favourably and, the following day, White and Fertita travelled to Stockton, California, to negotiate terms with Diaz for a rematch with McGregor, which they are believed to be targeting to headline UFC 202 in August. Conor McGregor punches Nate Diaz during UFC 196 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on March 5, 2016 in Las Vegas However, Diaz was not happy to agree to fight for the same money he was set to receive to face McGregor for at UFC 200 and White and Fertita left Stockton without a deal being struck.Explaining his position during a special appearance on the MMA Hour last Wednesday, Diaz said: It seems like this is a pretty big deal, so can I be compensated for this? That was UFC 200, this is UFC 202 now. I said yes to 200, and I wasnt happy with it. I was rushed into the last thing anyway. They werent the happiest about that, but theyre not talking to me about it right now, so were working on it and were going to get it figured out. Its great for both of them. Boxing followers will start following Conor; MMA followers are going to start following Floyd. Theyre all benefiting, and no one is losing, so theyre going to keep the ball rolling. Also See: McGregor: Floyd needs me Can McGregor box? Floyd confident of McGregor fight Do you like McGregor? "I could have been equipment manager but nooooo" from Lisa on Ice. Season 6, Episode 8. INDIANAPOLIS -- Johnny Manziel shed the Hollywood image Friday -- maybe for good. The brash-talking, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Texas A&M entered and exited the Lucas Oil Stadium media room through a back door. He ignored the television screens around him, monitors that provided live coverage of his media availability and that had been showing his college football highlights prior to his arrival. And it seemed Johnny Football had suddenly transformed himself into Johnny Business. "This is a job now. There are guys families, coaches families and jobs and all kinds of things on the line," he said in a stern, deliberate voice at the NFLs scouting combine. "For me, it wont be a hard thing to kick. Im extremely focused on whatever organization Ill be at and really pouring my heart out trying to be football 24-7 with that team." What he has to prove now is that he means every word. Since bursting onto the national stage in his Heisman-winning freshmen season, Manziel has been living large. Hes been courtside at NBA games, played golf at Pebble Beach, partied in Cabo and become a feature attraction for memorabilia hounds. Hes participated in dunk contests, publicly complained about life in College Station, Texas, developed a friendship with Tom Brady and never been shy about -- anything. But in Indianapolis, none of that stuff means a thing. Here, scouts and NFL front-office executives are treating Manziel as just another draft hopeful in the standard blue-and-green warm-up suit. Theyll see how he runs, how he tests and perhaps most important, how he answers questions. Most teams want to know whether this 21-year-old, fun-loving football star is mature enough to handle millions of dollars and live up to the tag of franchise quarterback. Fridays media availability may have been a good start. Rather than showcasing his bravado, Manziel, at times, sounded almost apologetic for some of the things hes said and done recently. "The main thing I wanted to portray that was more in the subplots of the article," he said, when asked about a story in which he seemed to warn Houston about bypassing him with the No. 1 overall pick, "was that whatever team I do end up with, whenever I do get to that team, whenever I am in that organization, each one of those guys is now my teammate, my brother and if Im on the field with those guys, Im going to try to be the best football player I can be." Other times, he sounded almost defiant. "I knew who I was meeting with, butt Im not sure of his official title.dddddddddddd Something along the lines of just a counselor," he said when pressed about reports he was being treated for alcoholism and anger management while at Texas A&M. When it became clear the 2012 Heisman winner measured in at 5-foot-11 3/4 inches, 207 pounds, shorter and lighter than his listed college measurements of 6-1 and 210, and shorter and lighter than many NFL teams seek in a starting quarterback, he wouldnt confirm the measurements. Instead, he explained that he more heart and passion for this sport than anyone in the draft. Not all the news was bad for Manziel. Though he stands about five inches shorter than Blake Bortles, another quarterback vying to wind up in Houston, Manziel came in with bigger hands -- a potentially big advantage on draft weekend. "I think it (hand size) is something that is highly underrated," said Arizona coach Bruce Arians, who has tutored Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck among others. "It depends on where you play. If you play in Lucas Oil, not too bad. Now, if you play in Green Bay and you struggle with controlling a football when its cold and wet, thats a problem. That goes into the evaluation process hard." Theres little doubt about Manziels skills. In 2012, he broke the SECs single-season record for total offense (5,116 yards), became the fifth player in FBS history to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in one season and then set an all-bowl rushing record for a quarterback (229 yards). After his jet-setting offseason and an NCAA investigation into autographs on memorabilia, critics contended a distracted Manziel regressed. But he actually threw for more yards (4,116), more touchdowns (37) and wound up with a better passing efficiency (172.9) in 2013 than he did in 2012. The Texas native believes he will only continue to get better on a bigger stage. But what scouts and team executives must determine between now and Mays draft is whether Johnny Football is for real or whether this personality change is just one more part of his ongoing act. "Im from a small town of Kerrville, Texas, 20,000 people. That gets lost when people make me out to be a big Hollywood guy," Manziel said. "Sometimes you get caught up in certain things, but at the same time its about continuing to learn and continuing to adapt to everything thats going on in my life. Im not saying its always easy, but continuing to be who Ive always been is a big thing for me."
