MILWAUKEE - If Julius Peppers is going to get more plays as a receiver, he may want to work on pass-catching skills during the Green Bay Packers bye week.Fortunately for the Packers, catching touchdown throws from Aaron Rodgers wasnt what Peppers was signed to do in Titletown. The veteran pass rusher has been productive on defence in his first season in Green Bay. Hes not going to dwell on the pass in the end zone he juggled for an incompletion, or the defences embarrassing second-half showing in a 44-23 loss last week to the New Orleans Saints. When you get kind of off-balanced, it sets you back, Peppers said. Were going to get it corrected.According to the Packers, Peppers and Texans defensive end J.J. Watt are the only players this season who have at least one sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception and a defensive touchdown.Coach Mike McCarthy has marveled about how Peppers veteran influence has rubbed off on teammates. While Peppers gets fiery on game days, he is relatively calm off the field.Me personally, Im just going to get away. Its not going to eat at me, Peppers said about his plans for the bye week. This doesnt need to sit with anybody. Its an opportunity to learn. We got beat, you accept that and you move forward from it.Green Bay (5-3) is in relatively good shape at the break, a game behind Detroit in the NFC North. Five of the Packers last eight games are at home, in the cold comfort of Lambeau Field. The bye comes at an especially opportune time for Rodgers, who tweaked his left hamstring against New Orleans. Rodgers, who has had a good first half, has said he wont miss the next game, Nov. 9 against Chicago. So far, so good, I would say is how were looking at it, coach Mike McCarthy said Monday at Lambeau Field about Rodgers status. For the most part, the up-tempo offence is playing well with Rodgers playing pitch-and-catch with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. The running game with Eddie Lacy has been inconsistent; McCarthy has said in some games that is in part due to a lack of attempts. The Packers seem to be at their best when theyre playing at a quick tempo, with Rodgers able to dissect mismatches, and Nelson and Cobb breaking free for big plays.Lacys receiving skills have improved, while rookie receiver Davante Adams is emerging as a third option. Green Bay, though, would benefit from getting more production out of the tight end position. What hasnt been so good is the rush defence, which gave up 172 yards on 24 carries to New Orleans Mark Ingram, allowing a whopping 7.2 yards per carry. The leagues worst defence against the run (153.5 yards per game) got dented again. Our issues on run defence are fundamental. We need to do a better job of staying square, getting (to) gaps and we need to tackle the ball carrier and put him on the ground, McCarthy said.Part of the problem this year may stem from the loss of veteran tackle B.J. Raji in August to a season-ending biceps injury. Raji had been having a good camp after moving back inside from end in the Packers tweaked scheme.Read-option plays have also been somewhat troublesome, having the effect of neutralizing pass rushers Clay Matthews and Peppers.Still, the Packers had shown some improvement against the run until the Saints game. They held Carolina to 108 yards on 25 carries the previous week and contained dual-threat quarterback Cam Newton. The defensive positives start with a renewed ability to create turnovers. Green Bay has 10 interceptions and five fumble recoveries. It is third in the league in turnover margin at plus-8 in large part because of Rodgers, who had a six-game stretch without an interception. We need to be more than a football team that has to rely on winning the turnover ratio, McCarthy said. To get where we want to, weve got to overcome when we dont just play to our identity or our format. What McCarthy will take, though, is a repeat of the first half from Peppers, the 34-year-old veteran who signed with Green Bay in the off-season after being a salary cap casualty of the Bears. The next time Peppers takes the field will be against his former team.I mean, things look like they are happening real fast and the other team is scoring a lot and we cant control that, Peppers said after the loss to the Saints. Whats important right now is how we respond, and I am sure we will do that after the bye week.___AP Sports Writer Brett Martel in New Orleans contributed to this report.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Genaro Armas at http://twitter.com/GArmasAP Outlet Salomon Online . Much of Mondays discussion focused on Bostons lineup considerations as the series progresses, specifically when the venue shifts to St.Leicesters Premier League title charge was built on exhilarating attacking in the first half of the season, but their mean defence is coming to the fore now. Ahead of their meeting with Southampton on Super Sunday, we take a look at how the high-flying Foxes have adapted… When Leicester sat top of the table at Christmas it was largely thanks to a formidable record of 37 goals in 17 games. Jamie Vardys record-breaking scoring run had propelled the relegation-favourites to unthinkable heights, but when his goals started drying up it was widely anticipated the magic would fade and the Foxes would start to slide.Their defensive record did not exactly cry out solidity, after all. Leicester had conceded 24 times in those 17 games - the same number as relegation-threatened Swansea - and it wasnt until late October that Claudio Ranieri had to come good on his promise of pizza to reward their first clean sheet of the season. Three months on, however, and Leicesters players are dining on pizza almost every week. Last weekends victory over Crystal Palace was their fourth 1-0 win in five games, and Premier League viewers have become accustomed to seeing them at the top of the pile. The Foxes are now just seven games away from making history with a title challenge that is rapidly gathering momentum. Leicesters Premier League record before and after Christmas Leicester 2015/16 Before Christmas After Christmas Games played 17 14 Wins 11 8 Draws 5 4 Losses 1 2 Goals scored 37 17 Goals conceded 24 7 Clean sheets 3 9 Leicester remain a deadly force on the counter-attack, but the statistics illustrate how the emphasis has shifted since Christmas. Before then, the Foxes were averaging 2.2 goals per game, but they have only netted 17 times in 14 outings since then at a rate of just 1.2 goals per game.Despite the drop-off in goals scored, however, Leicesters results have remained consistent, with their average points per game only falling slightly (from 2.4 before Christmas to 2.0 afterwards) while their lead at the top of the table continues to grow. Leicesters Premier League record before and after Christmas Leicester 2015/16 Before Christmas After Christmas Goals per game 2.2 1.2 Shots on target per game 5.1 3.9 Goals conceded per game 1.4 0.5 Shots on target faced per game 4.2 3.4 Points per game 2.2 2.0 A run of four shut-outs in five games has highlighted their defensive resilience in recent weeks, but the stinginess has been apparent for months.dddddddddddd Since Christmas, and with help from midfield enforcer NGolo Kante, a first-choice back five of Kasper Schmeichel, Danny Simpson, Robert Huth, Wes Morgan and Christian Fuchs has only been breached seven times.Once we got that first clean sheet, it cemented the idea in peoples heads that keeping a clean sheet is a great foundation to build upon, said back-up goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on Sky Sports News HQ. Weve got players who will always score goals, so if you can keep a clean sheet when the season gets tighter and the pressure starts to mount, you can win games by the odd goal. Mark Schwarzer highlights Leicesters defence as the key to their recent form Having found defensive shut-outs so hard to come by at the start of the campaign, Leicester have now kept nine in their last 13 games. In the same period, no other Premier League side has managed more than seven. They have the look of champions about them, noted Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp in his Daily Mail column - and hes not the only one to have been impressed. They dont give a lot away, said Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew after Riyad Mahrezs first-half strike settled last weekends game at Selhurst Park. Theyre underestimated defensively. Theyve got energy and theyre up to the ball all the time. Theyre tight and its difficult to create against them. Most Premier League clean sheets since Christmas Team Clean sheets Leicester 9 Southampton 7 Arsenal 6 Manchester City 6 The two centre-halves are confident in possession, they rarely make mistakes and they dont slash at clearances. They make good clearances from their defensive third and theyre fast. They have a lovely balance to the team and you have to admire them.Leicester have also had to adapt to their opponents attempts to nullify their goalscoring threat. The Foxes thrived in the first half of the season by ceding possession to their rivals, waiting for mistakes and springing forward on the counter-attack, but since their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal the likes of Norwich and West Brom have played them at their own game. Kasper Schmeichel, Robert Huth and Christian Fuchs have shone in recent weeks The Foxes have therefore averaged 53.4 per cent possession in the last five games compared to 40.5 per cent earlier in the season. The enforced change of approach has resulted in fewer opportunities for Ranieris attackers to get in behind, but their defensive solidity has made the difference at the other end.Leicester are now within touching distance of one of the most extraordinary achievements in football history, and while Mahrez and Vardy are likely to battle it out for the player of the year gong, they are certainly not the only individuals who are due a considerable share of the credit.
